Gone Wild: An Endangered Animal Alphabet by David McLimansPublished by Walker & Company in 2006
Caldecott Honor
Summary: Very creative, bold (entire book is graphic black and white with red accents) representations of ABCs using shapes of endangered species. Box of information includes scientific classification, habitat, and status of species. A little more detail for each species is included at the end.
Ideas for use in library:
Alphabet book; animal research projects. Not great for read aloud since is just an illustrated list of animal names, although does feature more details about animals;
Curriculum connections:
Science: investigate current status of endangered species: what has happened and what is being done to change the status?
Reading: compare and contrast a variety of ABC books to compare the approaches the authors take. Especially compare with animals featured in Aardvarks, Disembark! by Ann Jonas.
Special features: Extra details about each animal; List of further reading/websites
Accessed via Saint Joseph School library.
