The Desert is Theirs by Byrd Baylor

Title:
Author:
Illustrator:
Publisher:
Year:
Awards/Accolades: Caldecott Honor

Summary:
Describes aspects of the desert and how the animals and people who live there accomodate and respect the earth.

Use in Classroom/Library:
As with "Hawk, I'm Your Brother," I read a review of this in Beverly Slapin and Doris Seale's Through Indian Eyes: The Native Experience in Books for Children. Their criticism of this points out that the text equates the people with animals. I didn't see this at first and thought it was a beautiful expression of man living in harmony with the earth.

Curriculum Connections:
Science: desert biome

This title is in the UTK Library.
