Arrow to the Sun by Gerald McDermott

Title: Arrow to the Sun
Author/Illustrator:     Gerald McDermott
Publisher:     Viking
Year: 1974
Awards/Accolades: Caldecott Medal

Summary:
A child of the sun comes to earth and is rejected by his peers. He returns to the sun but must endure four trials. He is then "filled with the power of the sun" and returns to earth, where he is celebrated.

Use in Classroom/Library:
Because I have read the analysis by Debbie Reese (American Indians in Children's Literature blog), I would be careful to explain that some of the representations in the story do not accurately reflect Pueblo beliefs/practices. She actually recommends weeding this title. Commenters suggested moving it to fiction rather than folklore.

Curriculum Connections:
Native American studies; religious studies

This title is in the Saint Joseph School Library.
